A landscaper who took thousands of pounds for work he never finished called a judge a “muppet” as he was jailed.
Patrick Brien also branded District Judge Bernard Begley an “a******e” and said he wouldn’t pay the ordered compensation in an outburst as he was sent down at Manchester and Salford Magistrates Court. The 46-year-old, who has more than 50 previous offences including rape, was jailed conning unwitting customers out of thousands while leaving their gardens a mess.
Two days later Brien asked for £490 for materials to be transferred into O’Brien’s account saying she was the company secretary, however then failed to turn up for two days. On October 18 Brien he quoted an extra £650 to block pave the back garden taking the total price up to £2,300. The following day Brien and O’Brien, who he introduced as his wife, went to the house and asked for £1,000 to pay for more materials and staff wages.
On November 3, Brien and a man he described as his business partner, went to the property and asked for £100 as they were short on materials. When the householder refused, he began shouting at her. In the New Year, they initially threatened to cancel the job and refund the difference but then agreed to return with a workmen going to the property for around an hour on January 7 before asking for £240 for more stone. After this they did not return and messages went unanswered from January 23 onwards.
