UK fraud prevention body, Cifas, is warning individuals and companies to be extra vigilant following an increase in the number of scams seeking to exploit the coronavirus pandemic
Cifas says the Chartered Trading Standards Institute has identified a number of quizzes circulating on social media which claim to test a person’s knowledge of coronavirus and the impact of the pandemic. In reality, they are a means to obtain the sort of personal information associated with confidential online transactions.
Sussex police says criminals are calling elderly people, claiming to be from the NHS, and asking if the household requires any shopping. They are then asked for bank card details to complete the shopping. In another case the fraudsters claimed to be from Age UK, the charity. Even if there is no request for money, recipients are told not to click on links or download attachments as they may be mechanisms used by the fraudsters to infect the person’s computer or phone with malware that itself could steal sensitive data.Cifas says criminals are contacting individuals claiming to be able to help refund the cost of a holiday that has been cancelled as a result of COVID-19.
