France says it killed al-Qaeda leader in North Africa

French military forces killed the top al-Qaeda leader in North Africa, Abdelmalek Droukdel, in an operation in Mali on June 3, Defense Minister Florence Parly said in a statement Friday

Some 4,500 French soldiers have been deployed in the area since 2014, when Mali requested help. Last November, 13 troops were killed in a helicopter collision in Mali while battling militants.
