The Hill Times
Eighty years ago, the land, air, and naval services of the Allied forces came to liberate my country, France. Eighty years ago, 14,000 Canadian soldiers landed at Juno Beach, and 1,063 lost their lives in Normandy. Soldiers from the Royal Regina Rifles, the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, the North Shore Regiment, the Régiment de la Chaudière, the Queen’s Own Rifles, the Canadian Scottish Regiment, and other Canadian units breached the Atlantic Wall of which Adolf Hitler was so proud.
They left their homes and traveled far to help liberate countries that weren’t their own. We are indebted to them for the legacy of peace they left behind for future generations. I have had the privilege these last few weeks of presenting the Legion of Honour to three Canadian veterans: Jim Spenst and Nick Kuzuska in Saskatchewan, and Jack Finan in Ontario. I salute them once again on this day.
