Switching to this kind of ethanol can significantly benefit the atmosphere, environment and local biodiversity 🌎

Coty, the conglomerate that owns luxury brands such as Gucci and Calvin Klein, has started the production of fragrances using carbon-captured ethanol.Ethanol is a key ingredient in fragrance formulations. It’s a simple alcohol chemical compound.

Producing and burning ethanol releases carbon dioxide, which we know is harmful to our increasingly unwell planet.Carbon-captured ethanol works to combat some of that damage by ‘capturing’ emissions during the production process. It involves nearly no water consumption and lowers the need for agricultural land.

Switching to this kind of ethanol can significantly benefit the atmosphere, environment and local biodiversity. This has been made possible thanks to Coty’s partnership with LanzaTech, which bill themselves as a company using technology to ‘recycle’ waste carbon emissions, making new products from them instead, while ‘cleaning our air and giving carbon a second chance.’

The two began working together a couple of years ago, and now Coty have confirmed that as of late January 2022, the first Coty fragrances to use this type of ethanol went into production.Coty, who also owns Tiffany & Co, Hugo Boss, Marc Jacobs and plenty of other household names, says they’re now ahead of schedule on plans to make the majority of their fragrance portfolio more sustainable by 2023.

Dr. Shimei Fan, chief scientific officer at Coty, said: ‘Coty’s accelerated release of fragrances made using carbon-captured ethanol represents the groundbreaking sustainability progress that I joined Coty to lead.
