Crews from a dozen fire services joined 100 soldiers in tackling the seven square mile blaze
Flames covered seven square miles of the landmark, with smoke seen for miles around a location which also houses major TV and phone masts. Soldiers and helicopters were drafted in to help firefighters and a total of 41 days was spent putting out the initial fire and subsequent flare up.
In the days after the incident first started, Phil Whittaker, from Lancashire Fire and Rescue, was driving through the smoke and told Sky News: "It's quite surreal, it's like being drawn into darkness, into night time." Firefighter Trina Burrow added: "It is demoralising, you feel like you are fighting a losing battle but you have just got to keep trying."
Much of the focus was on protecting the vital communications masts at the top of the hill, which not only send TV signal to 7million homes but also provides mobile phone signal and assists police communications, but also protecting those in homes nearby.
