V.F. contributor MarkHarrisNYC weighs in on the current state of the Academy—and how this year's potential nominees could shake things up
One of the open secrets of the annual Oscar race is that who and what’s going to get nominated is a much more illuminating guessing game than who and what’s going to win. Victories are largely etched in granite by the time the nomination list comes out in January, and for every opened envelope that upends conventional wisdom and sparks Monday morning quarterbacking , there are five that can feel like a stultifying march toward grim inevitability .
With a substantially changed votership as a result of four years of efforts that have diversified the Academy by gender, race, nationality, and even experience, this year’s race offers an extra level of speculation—not just about who and what will be nominated, but about what those nominations will reveal about a largely new membership.
