Sunday, May 10, 2026. Four Canadians connected to a hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship are expected to arrive in British Columbia on Sunday and will enter a monitored isolation period upon arrival, provincial health officials say. In a statement Sunday, provincial health officer Bonnie Henry said the four passengers are travelling to B.C. aboard a chartered Government of Canada flight accompanied by a quarantine officer from the Public Health Agency of Canada.
Watch Dr. Bonnie Henry’s news conference live at noon below: Upon arriving the province, the passengers will be screened by local public health teams and transported directly to pre-arranged accomodation, where they will begin a 21-day self-isolation period under daily monitoring. Henry said the isolation period could be extended up to 42 days because of the incubation period associated with hantavirus exposure.
“At no point during their arrival or isolation period will they be in contact with the public. They will be monitored daily by local public health teams to ensure that they remain well and are safely isolating,” Henry said.
“It has been a very challenging time for these four Canadians and public health teams are committed to supporting them through this process. The MV Hondius outbreak has drawn international attention after eight confirmed cases of Andes hantavirus were linked to the Antarctic expedition cruise, including three deaths.
The Andes strain is the only known hantavirus capable of limited human-to-human transmission, though health experts continue to stress theFederal officials said earlier this week that several Canadians had already entered isolation after possible exposure linked to the cruise ship and subsequent flights. Health officials have repeatedly emphasized that hantavirus spreads very differently than respiratory viruses such as COVID-19 and is not considered to have pandemic potential.
Henry said B.C. has established protocols and specialized facilities in place should any symptoms develop, including access to the BC Biocontainment Treatment Centre at Surrey Memorial Hospital. The province says public health teams, federal agencies and border officials have coordinated the arrival plans to minimize any risk to the public.
