Whether you're a racing rookie or a seasoned gearhead, Playground Games' latest open world zoomer is a jaw-dropping, thrill-a-minute riot

The number of events and activities peppered across the map would be intimidating if they weren’t all so much fun. The sheer variety of things we can do staves off any sense of boredom. You’ll be racing down a dragstrip at nearly 500 kilometres per hour in a Koenigsegg Jesko one minute, then taking a 1931 Bentley 8-Litre for a leisurely spin through the countryside the next.

And, as usual, we’re even rewarded when we’re just farting around or driving across the badlands from one event to another, smashing through shrubs and signs, sliding around bends, and threading a needle between cars on the freeway.

It’s a giant feedback loop that will have you saying to yourself “just one more race…” until you eventually find yourself falling asleep at the wheel in the wee hours of the morning. And all of these activities are embedded within a sprawling, stunning world composed of hundreds of roads that stretch across the desert and along the ocean, wind through towns and rainforest, and skirt alongside flower-filled fields and up the sides of an active volcano. Occasional monster dust clouds and raging tropical storms are thrown in for good measure.

There’s a sense of unfettered joy in everything here. It’s a game that just wants to be fun. For everyone. It aims for every moment you spend with it — be it five minutes or five hours — to be a frustration-free, jaw-dropping, reward-filled delight. And in this endeavour it succeeds marvellously. If there was ever a racing game that needs to be in every Xbox owner’s library, Forza Horizon 5 is it.
