The game sees up to 50 toy soldiers parachuted onto the map, which takes the form of a child’s bedroom cluttered with toys. You can reload while taking cover behind the skateboard, or snipe opponents from the foosball table, with a map design that owes an awful lot to the blockbuster Pixar films.
The bedroom floor is absolutely littered with weapons and other objects — arguably way too many items for a confined map with only 50 players on it — and as usual it’s about scrapping away in an ever-shrinking map until you’re the last soldier standing. The game was opened for a play test for a couple of days last week, providing me with a brief chance to get stuck into the gameplay.
Talking of lurking, sniping does seem massively overpowered in this game. With a huge number of vantage points overlooking the bedroom floor, it’s hard to walk out into the open without getting popped, especially as the map closes in. At least each player is equipped with a grapple gun by default, making it easier to reach some of those lofty perches yourself. That said, the grapple gun has a cool-down period after each use, meaning there’s nostyle swinging from ledge to ledge like a hyperactive Tarzan to make a quick escape from firing enemies.
I tested the game on my 2021 MacBook Pro and performance was pretty smooth, if not flawless, especially when there were several players on the screen at the same time. Still, the point of play tests is to help smooth out such glitches. The game is based on the same Unreal Engine as Fortnite.says the game has a planned release date of Q2 2024, meaning it could be only a month or two from release. It will need a good dollop of polish before it’s ready for a full release, in my view.
