A proposed settlement would award $5.2 million of the total to former Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald. The City Council is scheduled to vote on the plan Tuesday.Former Fort Worth Police Chief Fitzgerald , spent months investigating alleged violations of federal regulations regarding the FBI’s criminal justice information system, his whistleblower lawsuit states.
The parties met July 3 to mediate the lawsuits and agreed to settle, according to city documents. While the settlement would end all trials and appeals, the city continues to deny liability in all three cases.If the settlement is approved, Fitzgerald would receive $5.2 million, Birchett $2.4 million and Burke $2 million, according to city documents.fired May 20, 2019
In July 2019, the Texas Workforce Commission said there was no evidence Fitzgerald was guilty of work-related misconduct at the Washington event, according to court records, and it reversed a decision that the city didn’t have to provide him benefits. In May 2020,Birchett and Burke worked in information technology solutions and also fired in 2019. Their lawsuits said they reported their concerns of cybersecurity issues to city officials and to Fitzgerald and were fired in retaliation.
