A one-off concert led by principal guest conductor Kevin John Edusei.
The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra performs with principal guest conductor Kevin John Edusei in the recently opened Van Cliburn Concert Hall at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas on Feb. 11, 2023. FORT WORTH — In an area blessed with quite a few acoustically outstanding concert halls, Texas Christian University has added yet another. Van Cliburn Concert Hall, in the recently opened TCU Music Center, has a rich spaciousness of sound almost unimaginable in a 717 seat hall.
. With a third of the seating capacity of Bass Performance Hall, the orchestra’s normal concert venue, TCU’s new hall yielded a massive sound that stopped just short of overpowering. Its two-second glow of reverberation seemed to defy laws of physics. I could only stay for the first half of the concert. It opened with British composer Dani Howard’s razzle-dazzle, its cascades and swirls of multicolored sonic confetti gradually stirring up brass fanfares.
The Brahms Double Concerto suggested the orchestra hadn’t had enough time to adjust to the more intimate setting. Edusei — otherwise a very musical leader — would have done better to scale down fortissimos a good 15 percent. Principal cellist Allan Steele played with amazing technical assurance, but too aggressively for the room. In much better balance, concertmaster Michael Shih was the accomplished violin soloist.
