Smith said that should Kenney lose an upcoming leadership vote, she will throw her name in for the ensuing fight for the party\u0027s top job.

Newly-elected UCP MLA Brian Jean speaks to supporters at his campaign office in Fort McMurray as early unofficial results roll in from the Fort McMurray-Lac La Biche byelection on Tuesday, March 15, 2022.Smith has a long history in Alberta politics, beginning with a nearly year-long stint as a Calgary Board of Education trustee in the 1990s. She would later become the leader of the provincial Wildrose Party and elevate the party to official Opposition status.

Following her time in politics, Smith hosted a daily talk radio show on Corus Radio for six years and has regularly written columns for Postmedia papers, including the Calgary Herald. She left Corus last year, decrying what she perceived as restrictions on free speech saying there were topics that were “unchallengeable”. She has since been the president of the Alberta Enterprise Group.

Should she be successful in her nomination in Livingstone-Macleod, she said she would look to involve the grassroots of the party and work to make sure MLAs have a voice in the caucus and the ability to bring forward constituents’ concerns. She said Alberta needs to begin recognizing previous infections of COVID-19 in travel and fight Ottawa for more autonomy within Canada.
