Former Arizona Wildcat Gigi Stoll has a one-shot lead over ex-teammate Haley Moore and one other golfer entering the final round of the Casino Del Sol Golf Classic at Sewailo Golf Club.
Aidan Wohl Special to the Arizona Daily Star This week’s third annual Casino Del Sol Golf Classic wasn’t just a typical event for former Arizona national champion and LPGA golfer Gigi Stoll — it was a coming-home party.
People are also reading… This event might have felt like another day hitting shots for Stoll, playing at her former home course, where she placed third in the Wildcat invitational in a collegiate career-best 209 strokes in 2018. Fast-forward five years, and she's atop the leaderboard with one round to go.
Stoll, who currently practices her game in Las Vegas, attributed a lot of her early success as a professional to her former club, The Reflection Bay Club, a Jack Nicklaus-designed course. The Oregon native endured this obstacle last week after she missed qualifying by three shots for the Los Angeles Open in Palos Verdes Estates, California, on Monday. Stoll then had to drive nearly eight hours to get from L.A. to Tucson the next day to compete on the Epson Tour.
“Once you’re professional, you have to take care of things yourself,” Stoll said."Now that I've been on the tour and as a professional for four years now, I've seen a lot more things and I know a lot of ways that just make travel life easier ... some things I wish I would have known then that make it easier now. But it's great to have that experience.”
