He hopes to restore public trust, but may face an uphill battle from critics of his time as police chief

“The role of a chief of police is complex,” he said. “But you have to understand something. There are people that know me and then there are people who know about me ... the people that know me know what my values are and know where I stand. They know I care about keeping everybody safe in the city.”

Saunders has also been challenged for failing to deliver meaningful police reforms to address systemic racism and better responses to mental health crises. He said Monday he does not want to continue the “status quo” and points to 24-7 mental health care access as a priority need in the city he will focus on.

: “I think the world of a lot of the candidates, but chief Saunders did a great job as police chief and if he goes in, that’s good. I think that’s great.”, including building a large private spa.“It’s going to be one of the most vibrant sections of the country and I’m excited about that,” he said.
