Peyton Stearns knew something was off following her breakthrough at the French Open. She...

Peyton Stearns returns the ball during her ATX Open tennis match against Mirjam Bjorklund at the Westwood Country Club in Austin, Texas, Wednesday, March 1, 2023. Stearns is playing in the French Open for the first time and now the 21-year-old American is into the third round after knocking off 2017 champion Jelena Ostapenko. Stearns used her big forehand to put together the 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 victory on Wednesday, May 31, 2023.

The 21-year-old rookie overpowered the 2017 French Open champ in three sets to advance to the third round at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in her fledgling career. Though Stearns fell to ninth-seeded Daria Kasatkina in the Round of 32, that journey to Paris felt like launchpad to greater things.

“It’s not super surprising to me,” Stearns told reporters after dispatching 17th-seeded Ostapenko. “If I go out there and play my game then the best can come. Trying to play not to lose but to win is a big thing. And that’s what happened today.”
