Kelly was fired in Houston the same day David Culley was dismissed as head coach in January 2022. Less than a month later, Kelly landed a spot on Mike Vrabel's staff as the Titans' passing game coordinator. Kelly and Vrabel worked together in Houston as assistants under Bill O'Brien.
Kelly replaces Todd Downing, who was fired last month after two seasons running Tennessee's offense. After having the NFL's second-ranked offense in total yards in 2020, the Titans dipped to No. 17 in Downing's first season in charge in 2021 and was 30th last season, ahead of only the Texans and Rams.
Kelly got his start in the NFL with the Texans, following Bill O'Brien from Penn State to Houston. In his eight years with the Texans, Kelly worked in quality control, assisted with the offensive line and coached tight ends before being promoted to offensive coordinator. Kelly was credited with some of the success of Deshaun Watson on the 2019 team that made it to the second round of the playoffs before blowing a lead in Kansas City.
