Although Mark Schoenberg only headed up Sudbury Theatre Centre for one season, his impact was felt, writes Judi Straughan
Mark Schoenberg, artistic director of Sudbury Theatre Centre from 1989-1990, passed away on April 17.He followed that of founding artistic director, Tony Lloyd — a tough act for anyone to follow. Schoenberg was an intellect with a PhD. He was a theatre professor and innovator, filled with enthusiasm as he looked forward to his appointment at STC.
The tragedy of it all was that Sudbury audiences were not drawn to his choices. After overwhelming pushback and controversy, he announced in the spring of 1990, that he was moving on to become artistic director and theatre teacher at Humber College in Toronto. Schoenberg confessed it had been a terribly difficult year for him in Sudbury.
Two years later, Racicot became a theatre student of Schoenberg's at Humber College, calling Schoenberg a “surrogate father” to his students. It was evident that Schoenberg was now in tune to what Sudburians demanded from their regional professional theatre company.
