Former Spurs Larry Kenon joins others as people gather for the Red McCombs’ Celebration of Life memorial service at Tobin Center on Monday, Feb. 27, 2023.Engaged in a fight for his life, then-Spurs star Sean Elliott received a big assist from former team owner B.J. “Red” McCombs.
“He rescued me personally,” former Spur Avery Johnson said in delivering one of several eulogies at the service. Johnson eventually became point guard of the Spurs’ 1999 championship team, the first of five they won in a 15-year span. By then, McCombs was a season-ticket holder and the team’s most prominent booster.
“I am definitely going to miss him,” Gervin said. “He would take me to his ranch and we would look at his longhorns. He was a special man, and I am proud to say he was friend.”“We didn’t really haggle that much about money. and that comes with having a relationship,” Gervin said. “All the guys who played for him, especially from the beginning, are going to talk about the relationship they had with Red.... Red was a beautiful man. He is definitely going to be missed.
