NHL: Former San Jose Sharks GM Doug Wilson said his health has improved but that he still faces a long recovery process

SAN JOSE – Doug Wilson said his physical health has improved but that he still faces a long recovery process from an unspecified illness that caused him to step down as the Sharks’ general manager earlier this year.

“I have tremendous empathy for the people that deal with things that you need to be proactive and deal with. I let some things slide and I got to not a great place, to be honest. As he spoke on a stage, Wilson, 65, was still bothered at times Saturday by the persistent cough that he had last fall prior to his decision to take what was then believed to be a temporary medical leave.

“I’m in good hands. I think I’m in a better place than I was 10, 11 months ago,” Wilson said. “I’ve got to be a better patient. That’s what I’ve been told. But it was concerning. I feel like there’s lots of light at the end of the tunnel.” “But I don’t look back and I’m very, very proud of the fact that Mike Grier, one of our former players, is going to do a great job and I’m a supporter of his. It was the right time.”
