The volunteer for Calgary-Skyview MP George Chahal was told by officials that she couldn't vote in a riding she didn't live in.
“Despite having been informed of the prohibition against voting in Calgary Skyview, election documents and other information obtained during an investigation by the Office of the Commissioner of Canada Elections establish that Ayesha Chughtai voted at an advanced poll in that electoral district on September 13, 2021.
The report also cited Chughtai’s admission that she was a volunteer with Calgary Skyview’s Liberal Party of Canada Candidate George Chahal, and intended on casting a vote in the riding to support him.Information on file shows that Ayesha Chughtai was working for the LPC during the 44th general election — including as a volunteer for the LPC candidate for whom she indicated she wished to vote — and that she was then also an employee of the Prime Minister’s Office,” the report stated.
“The failure of those involved in the political process to comply with the rules adopted by Parliament to ensure a fair election can contribute to a loss of public confidence in the integrity of members of the political class, which may, as a result, increase voter apathy.”Article content This isn’t the first time Calgary Skyview found itself in the crosshairs of the election commissioner.
In the final days of the 2021 election campaign, closed circuit video showed Chahal — a former Calgary city councillor —the homeowner who caught the theft on camera said the flyer left by Chahal included directions to a polling station on the far side of the riding, instead of the elementary school just down the street.
