Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf says it's his calling to share his addiction and recovery journey with others struggling with mental health and substance abuse.

Instead, Leaf would hit rock bottom; an addiction to Vicodin eventually led him to a prison cell. In 2009, the San Diego Chargers quarterback was arrested for drug and burglary charges. That was followed by a second arrest in 2012 for breaking and entering with intent to steal prescription medication from a homeowner. Leaf spent two years in prison.By telling others about what he went through, and the challenges he continues to face, he wants to offer them hope.

Leaf was intrigued by the idea of working with Menninger. He often receives requests from people with addictions reaching out for guidance about substance abuse. The partnership would allow him to point them to more comprehensive resources, he said. Dr. Daryl Shorter, medical director of addictions services at Menninger, hopes that Leaf will provide encouragement to those who feel lost. “He’s someone who can transmit a sense of hope and provide perspective,” Shorter said. “In many ways, he’s like a member of our team.”

The center is housed in a 33,000-square-foot, two-story building that was completed in September. The facility, which also includes the Center for Brain Stimulation, Sleep Medicine Service and Outpatient Services, enables Menninger to expand its outpatient visits.
