The longtime finance director for the music society pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court to a count of wire fraud, admitting he embezzled more than half a million dollars over 10 years

Chris Benavides, the longtime director of finance for the La Jolla Music Society, pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court toBenavides, 52, was fired from his job at the music society in March of 2021 after officials there discovered more than $110,000 in losses. The society reported the losses to law enforcement, leading to Benavides’ criminal prosecution and guilty plea Wednesday to one count of wire fraud.

While the 53-year-old nonprofit has launched a forensics audit, it has not yet decided whether to take any civil action against the employee An attorney for Benavides, reached by phone Wednesday afternoon, said he could not immediately provide a comment.
