On Wednesday, the B.C. Brock Martland, a Vancouver lawyer in private practice, was appointed special prosecutor in this case. The appointment of a special prosecutors is intended “to avoid any potential for real or perceived improper influence in the administration of justice considering the nature of the allegations and the identity of the accused as an elected municipal official,” said the prosecution service in a statement.Basran is scheduled to appear in Kelowna provincial court on January 24, 2023.
He ran for re-election in the October municipal election but lost his seat to current mayor Tom Dyas.
