A man in his 40s has been arrested for attempted murder and a gun confiscated, police said, according to NHK

A witness who spoke to NHK at the scene said “after the second shot, the man stepped back and the Prime Minister fell to the ground.” The assailant did not run away afterward, said the woman, who did not give her name, but allowed himself to be detained by Mr. Abe’s police bodyguards.

Another witness said Mr. Abe was “bleeding from the chest.” Kyodo News reported that when the former premier was taken to hospital he was not conscious and appeared to be in “cardiac arrest.” No further information about the alleged assailant is known, other than he was dressed in a grey T-shirt and beige trousers. Police said they are currently investigating.
