Kim Vale, a 69-year-old from Hudson, Quebec, shares her experience of transitioning from a 35-year career in insurance to a fulfilling retirement lifestyle through contract work.
Kim Vale, 69, of Hudson, Que., retired in 2018 at the age of 64 after 35 years in the insurance business. She loved the people she worked with, but she was tired of the daily grind and a 90-minute commute each way. Vale gave her employer a year’s notice that she planned to retire. She wanted a seamless transition and time to figure out how to work part-time consulting in retirement. The first couple of months in retirement were busy, but by the second month, Vale was starting to feel bored.
She has a short attention span and needed something to keep her occupied. Vale was only retired a couple of months before she got the first phone call for some contract work, which she was happy about. She liked the idea of choosing when she wanted to work and knew she would be bored if she didn’t do something. Also, her work is challenging, and she enjoys it. She also needed to work to maintain her lifestyle in retirement, spending money on things she didn’t like to do herself, such as cleaning and gardening
