The Pennsylvania Department of General Services announced on Tuesday that it plans to keep the approximate 300-acre property for current and future state government use instead of putting it up for sale as the General Assembly had authorized in 2017.
It was prior to the deal’s expiration when he said discussions began about a joint laboratory project in the Harrisburg area that would centralize and modernize the labs for the departments of agriculture, conservation and natural resources, environmental protection, health and state police.
The mountain of masks, gloves, gowns and other gear were temporarily stored at the Farm Show complex. That led to that facility being declared off-limits to outfits that wanted to rent space for their events.by that until finally general services moved the stockpile to a secure location in leased space.
Currently, the mostly vacant property is occupied by maintenance staff, the legislative mail facility and the commonwealth’s technology center. Hundreds of other employees who once worked in buildings on the property have all been relocated in nearby office space. “I’m sorry it didn’t work out for Dauphin County per se but I do hope the property will be put to good use and will bring some income into the commonwealth,” Helm said.
Thompson said the department recognizes the importance of maintaining the property’s environmental integrity and understands a section of the Capital Area Greenbelt crosses it. Additionally, it is working with the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum since some of the buildings located on it are on the National Register of Historic Places and cannot be demolished.
