The 58-year-old actress — who shot to fame as a child on ‘Opportunity Knocks’ in the 1970s — first appeared as Melanie Bush in the BBC sci-fi series in the 1980s as the companion to the Sixth and Seventh Doctors played by Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy and initially reprised her role as a cameo opposite Jodie Whittaker in 2022 but will now return to the show once more when Ncuti Gatwa takes over in the title role.
Showrunner Russell T Davies commented that Langford — who away from her time in the show has made her name in theatre with roles in musicals such as ‘9 to 5’ and ‘Anything Goes’ and also enjoyed a three-year stint on soap opera ‘EastEnders’ — will be “right in the thick of the action” when the show returns to screens in November.
He said: “Open those TARDIS doors wide, because Bonnie’s back! What an honour, delight and hoot to welcome back the character of Melanie, after too long away. And this isn’t just a cameo, Bonnie is right in the thick of the action, battling monsters and chaos and cliffhangers, right at the Doctor’s side, just like the old days!”
