Capt. Kevin Whiteside took command of the naval base during a ceremony Tuesday, succeeding Capt. Jeffrey Hutchinson.
Hutchinson, who had been in charge of the base since July 15, 2021, will assume his appointment as director of naval strategy and policy in the coming weeks.
He’s also held several command roles, including executive officer sea training Pacific and executive assistant to the 35th and 36th commanders of the Royal Canadian Navy. “It is my honour and privilege to serve as commander of CFB Esquimalt, joining an incredible team of professionals — military and civilian — who make up a vital part of the greater defence community,” said Whiteside.
CFB Esquimalt is home port for Canada’s Pacific naval fleet and includes properties on the Lower Mainland and as far north as Haida Gwaii.
