Matusz was selected by the Orioles with the fourth overall pick in the 2008 draft.

He made his MLB debut in 2009 and was a starter until transitioning to the bullpen in 2012. That year, Baltimore qualified for the playoffs as a wild card for the first time in 15 years. The Orioles traded Matusz to Atlanta in 2016, and he later played for the Chicago Cubs, making his final MLB appearance in 2016
