John Horgan , former premier of British Columbia who has been serving as Canada’s ambassador to Germany , died Tuesday at the age of 65, after a third battle with cancer.
The New Democratic Party leader served as premier of B.C. from 2017 until 2022, when he stepped down following his second cancer diagnosis. Following treatment, he was appointed to the embassy posting. He was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in June. “His achievements are too numerous to mention, but he was a consequential premier at a critical time in our history,” said B.C. Premier David Eby, who replaced Mr. Horgan in 2022. “He sought to address injustice wherever he saw it - using his time in office to help build a better, stronger British Columbia for everyone.”
Mr. Horgan steered the province through the pandemic after pulling together a minority government in 2017, before calling a snap election in 2020 that delivered the NDP a majority government for the first time since 1996.The Horgan family issued a statement on X confirming that he was able to return from Germany to be with his family. “John passed away peacefully this morning at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria.
