Araiza shows off hang time as San Diego State's Pro Day gives players a chance to showcase themselves for NFL scouts
For all of San Diego State punter Matt Araiza’s accomplishments last season — most notably an NCAA-record 51.19-yard punt average — there was one area he still needed to work on to impress professional scouts.“I didn’t show anything close to that on film,” Araiza said. “It wasn’t an emphasis of mine.”In college, everyone can release at the snap of the ball, so there’s plenty of teammates downfield to make a tackle by the time the ball returns to earth.
Scouts from virtually all of the NFL’s 32 teams were in attendance as nearly a dozen former Aztecs participated. It was an opportunity for scouts to gather information for the draft that takes place April 28-30 in Las Vegas. “So I thought it was important that I came out and showed them it wasn’t just a one-time wonder type thing.”
“I thought the 65-yard balls would go away, but it’s been the opposite,” Araiza said. “There’s been more of them. I’m excited. I’m ready to give the next level a go.” “I just had to come out here and show I could run the 40, the shuttle and stuff like that and also show I could catch the ball,” said Bell, who did not participate in most of the measurable activities at the combine.
