Retired Mountie Geordie Erickson has been charged following an Alberta police watchdog investigation of an April 2019 shooting that left a man seriously injured.

A retired Alberta RCMP officer has been charged with aggravated assault after a provincial police watchdog investigation into a 2019 shooting. A former central Alberta RCMP officer is facing a serious criminal charge six years after he shot a man in the cheek.

According to court information, he is 58 years old. CBC News has reached out to RCMP for clarity on the detachment where Erickson was employed. When ASIRT began investigating the Eckville shooting in 2019, the agency said the officer involved was looking into a possible location of stolen oilfield property, behind a strip of businesses on the north side of town.

While he was waiting, there was a "confrontation" that led to the officer shooting the man, ASIRT said.
