Foreign journalists in China are facing “unprecedented hurdles” reporting on the country, including threats of legal actions, online trolls’ campaigns and dwindling numbers after the expulsion of colleagues, according to a new report.

The Foreign Correspondents’ Club of China , which represents international journalists, said that media freedom was declining at “breakneck speed” as the authorities appear to be encouraging a spate of lawsuits or legal threats, typically filed by sources long after they have explicitly agreed to be interviewed.Local journalists in mainland China and Hong Kong are also being targeted, detained or physically assaulted, it added.
