Ford is recalling about 519,000 late-model sport-utility vehicles in the U.S. for possible cracked fuel injectors that could increase the risk of an under-hood fire.

Motor Co. is recalling about 519,000 late-model sport-utility vehicles in the U.S. for possible cracked fuel injectors that could increase the risk of an under-hood fire.

The auto maker said some Bronco Sport and Ford Escape SUVs spanning model years 2020 to 2023 with 1.5-liter engines could have the problem. When the engine is running, a cracked fuel injector could cause fuel or vapor to accumulate near hot surfaces and start a fire, the company said. Ford has received reports of 20 fires related to the defect, including three that ignited structures nearby, a company spokeswoman said. It hasn’t received any reports of fatalities and is aware of four non-burn-related injuries linked to the problem, she said. The company said it is not instructing owners of the SUVs to stop driving their vehicles, unless there is a smell of gas or smoke. Ford plans to send owners a notice on Dec.

Dealers will update the vehicle’s software to detect signs of a cracked fuel injector and alert the driver through a dashboard notification, the company said. The fix will also include installation of a tube to drain fuel away from hot surfaces, Ford said. Quality problems have dogged Ford in recent years. Ford Chief Executive Jim Farley, who took over in October 2020, has made it a priority toSome of the same vehicles subject to the safety action also were recalled last spring because of a potentially faulty engine oil separator that risks leaking oil and potentially sparking an under-hood fire. Ford said this week that most owners already have had that recall completed.
