Thomas Carrique, currently the deputy chief for York Regional Police, will serve as the new commissioner of the Ontario Provincial Police

Deputy Chief Carrique has spent 29 years with York Regional police in a variety of fields, including criminal investigations, traffic and operations, according to a news release."We are very excited to announce Deputy Chief Thomas Carrique as the next Commissioner of the Ontario Provincial Police," Minister of Community Safety Sylvia Jones said in a statement.

Brad Blair, a veteran OPP commander, was fired last week after launching a lawsuit to compel the provincial Ombudsman to review the hiring process. Mr. Blair, who was also a front-runner for the position, went public with his concerns in December, alleging that"inappropriate political interference or cronyism" could affect OPP operations.
