Doug Ford, leader of the Ontario PC party, remains committed to his plan for a new expressway built beneath the congested Highway 401, despite concerns about the project's feasibility and cost. Ford argues that the tunnel, one of the 'world's longest', will create jobs, boost the economy, and alleviate traffic congestion.
Ontario PC leader Doug Ford reiterated his ambitious plan to construct a new expressway by tunneling beneath the congested Highway 401 during a campaign stop on Friday. This ambitious project, envisioned as one of the 'world's longest' tunnels, aims to integrate new lanes for both vehicles and public transit beneath the heavily trafficked artery. The Ontario PCs are now promoting this endeavor as 'one of the largest, most ambitious infrastructure projects in the world.
' Despite concerns surrounding the feasibility of such a colossal undertaking, Ford remains resolute, framing the gargantuan public works project as a means to bolster the provincial economy amidst the looming threat of 25 percent tariffs that could be imposed by the U.S. government in the coming weeks.'With the threat of tariffs looming over our economy, it's more crucial than ever to do everything in our power to enhance Ontario's economic competitiveness and generate new jobs and opportunities for workers,' stated Doug Ford. Ford characterizes the new expressway plan as a 'gamechanger' for the province, asserting that it will secure good-paying jobs for thousands of Ontario workers and inject billions of dollars back into the economy while alleviating gridlock on the most congested highway. The estimated cost of a tunnel spanning from Brampton and Mississauga in the west to beyond Markham and Scarborough in the east is projected to be between $50 and $100 billion. While the province has yet to release its own cost estimate, Ford's campaign maintains that the expenditure is warranted. In a press release, the Ontario PC party argues that gridlock in Ontario imposes a staggering $56.4 billion annual toll on the economy and contends that projects like this, along with the controversial Highway 413, are essential to revitalizing the province's transportation infrastructure. The province cites Ministry of Transportation modeling that predicts 400-series highways will reach or exceed capacity within a decade, and that the central section of Highway 401 will witness travel times doubling by 2051, adding 90 minutes to commutes.
