.Nike has unveiled performance wear for the Olympics that fuses sustainability with innovation.
The temperature in Las Vegas climbed to more than 105 degrees 25 times in August of 2019. Those are 25 days that Vashti Cunningham, an Olympic-bound high jumper, had to rethink her practice schedule to accommodate the scalding heat. “I really am affected by the heat in Las Vegas when I train,” Cunningham told. “Sometimes we will go and train earlier in the morning or try to get there when the sun goes down.” One of her practical solutions is working with Nike on cooling apparel.
The next thing—for all of us—is climate change. But thinking about it, really, is not enough. So for practical action Nike has made technical innovations in some of the apparel and footwear for the Olympics’ most visible sports—track and field, basketball, soccer, and skateboarding—as well as creating medal-stand uniforms that are made from 100% recycled materials.
For track and field, this means uniforms made with recycled polyester as well as Flyknit shoes, which reduce waste by-product, from Nike’s new Air Zoom Alphafly or Vaporfly collections. The Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next% sneaker played a crucial role in Eliud Kipchoge running a marathon in less than 2 hoursThat recycled material could become a legging or a sports bra or even what athletes who medal will wear on the Olympic medal stand. Team USA’s white tracksuits are made from 100% recycled polyester, including their sneakers, which are part of Nike’s new 100% recycled program called Space Hippie.
