Good movies about the moon are easy to find, and ever more so with the Apollo 11 anniversary upon us. Here are Journal critic Joe Morgenstern's five favorite journeys.
By Joe Morgenstern July 14, 2019 9:05 pm ET In “Apollo 11,” the superb documentary that played in multiplexes all too briefly a few months ago, a Houston controller tracking the astronauts’ escape from terrestrial gravity uses a wonderfully evocative phrase—“the lunar sphere of influence.
The moon seems to elevate the filmmaking game. Not always, of course; for every “Apollo 11” there’s a “Nude on the Moon.” Still, good moon movies are easy to find, and ever more so with the Apollo 11 anniversary upon us. Here are five of my favorites, in chronological order of their release. Apollo 13 div.youtube { height:0; position:relative; padding-bottom:56.25%; } div.youtube > iframe { position: absolute; left: 0; top: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; } ‘Apollo 13’ combines vast technical information and a classic tale of heroism.
First Man div.youtube { height:0; position:relative; padding-bottom:56.25%; } div.youtube > iframe { position: absolute; left: 0; top: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; } ‘First Man’ tells the story of mankind’s boldest adventure through a taciturn hero. While “Apollo 13” is a model of mating fact and fiction in a single feature film, “First Man” exemplifies the power of fiction to illuminate the essence of people and events we previously knew only from the outside.
