Lizelle Herrera was charged with murder for what police said was a “self induced abortion,' before charges were dropped.
But before the charges were dropped, Torres and her colleagues jumped into action, ready to fight yet another step forward in the hasty erosion of reproductive rights in Texas.
Twelve hours after celebrating her 26th birthday with her friends, Torres was at the Starr County Jail with other pro-choice advocates where they chanted in support of Herrera, ate pan dulce, listened to music, and talked to assembled media. “We were there, making noise, speaking, chanting, just letting the community know we’re outraged this happened,” Torres says. “And we were there standing with Lizelle.”the charges against Herrera were dropped.
Ariana Rodriguez, a 24-year-old pro-choice activist and volunteer, said she and other advocates were sounding the alarm, the Texas ban that effectively outlawed abortion past six weeks and allows private citizens to sue anyone who “aids or abets” an abortion outside those strict parameters. “We knew people were going to be persecuted for abortions,” Rodriguez says. “We were talking about how terrifying it would be and people weren’t listening.
With the increase in abortion restrictions in Texas, Rodriguez points out that "laws like this especially target, disabled people, people with low income or working class people. It’s a structural issue to even get access to abortion.”
