For young people, navigating the criminal justice system can be extremely difficult — and that's especially the case when you can't read or can't read well.

as part of The Brooklyn Museum's "States of Denial" series about mass incarceration, where she explains that while many young people who end up incarcerated may not have had books at home, Jiang Stein said having them in prison may help.

"Most of these households don't have a book in the house. I mean, there's not a book in the home, so they don't see it, so it's not encouraged. We know that reading opens up just a view outside of ourselves, and that's really ... wondering how to be different, who can I be, who have I strived to be?" she says.

Despite that, Jiang Stein said many prisons don't have adequate books for young people to read, to both help them imagine themselves succeeding outside an incarceration setting, and to help them increase their literacy level. "Often, just because of space, [the books] are on a cart," Jiang Stein says. "But it's never enough, so there's never enough variety, because think of the interests. Also because, why wouldn't a girl want to read about engineering for example? Often it's very gender focused."

In order help the issue before it starts, Jiang Stein's organization, the unPrison Project, provides books to women in prison to read to their children on visiting day. That way, according to the organization, the children who own books are
