Get to know fashion designer Anifa Mvuemba ✨⤵️
, that world is her real life. The 30-year-old designer and creator of fashion brand Hanifa has found a way to cut through the noise and build an empire that speaks to many while remaining true to herself.
Mvuemba’s debut show was held at The National Portrait Gallery in D.C. and it was a chance for her to showcase Hanifa’s authenticity and commitment to honoring her community. “I’m intentional. I like doing things my way and I hate conforming, being placed in a box,” she shares. “It honestly makes me uncomfortable. This show in D.C. was me staying true to myself and also challenging myself. The outcome was mind-blowing.
It’s almost unbelievable after this past year to imagine the luxury brand’s path possibly being cut short then, but after some much-needed soul-searching, Mvuemba steered back onto the path she now knows she was destined for. “All roads led me back to Hanifa,” she says. “I remember saying a prayer: ‘God, if this is really what you want me to do, make it so that I never look back again. I have to keep moving forward. Give me something else that I could do.
The last two years have been difficult for all creative spaces. The pandemic limited in-person production and opportunities to collaborate. Mvuemba herself even found it hard to find that spark while stuck at home. But, after some time, she decided to lean into her love for tech and design. It all started with her playing around with Photoshop and creating digital designs. After bombarding her team with the 3D designs she had created, they felt it was too great not to share.
