ICYMI - For city folk, backcountry camping is a way to get away from it all
, nearly two hundred kms north of Toronto. No larger than a football field, it is technically a campsite, although distinguished from a unmarked plot of land by the barest amenities — a picnic table, a fire pit, a box privy. Paddling back to it across the water, we were struck once again by its pristine beauty, an oasis, almost a mirage.AdvertisementWe were invited on a whim.
It’s hardly glamorous, but I suppose that’s the attraction. After three months in lockdown, leaving our apartment for a period did seem restorative, even if the conditions were extreme. So I agreed to make a go of it. We started with an expedition to Canadian Tire, where we equipped ourselves with a small fortune’s worth of essentials: air mattress, sleeping bags, headlamps, hammock, folding stools, large plastic cooler. The tent, thank God, we could borrow from Dani and Ashley.
Calum Marsh’s tent is set up in the backcountry, where he went camping with friends, for the first time since he was a teenager.I rode with Dani in the heavier canoe, Julia in the other with Ashley, who was trying vainly to paddle while holding on to two dogs. Ashley and Dani had brought their big, energetic mutts, Mickey and Sandals Jamaica, and within minutes of setting off, they were whining and barking furiously, practically yanking Ashley out of the boat as they sought to bail out the side.
Something that occurs to you, several hours into the first day backcountry camping, is how much time we ordinarily spend entertained or distracted. On a given day, I’ll look at my phone every couple of minutes, lazily scrolling through Instagram or some other social media feed, or else watch TV, stream a video on YouTube, play a video game or enjoy a film.
