OTTAWA – Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne said his push for lower grocery prices has yielded unspecified discounts, price freezes and price-matching offers, but he didn’t have clear answers Thursday about how much or how quickly prices might fall.

Champagne also announced a new office of consumer affairs to focus on grocery prices, a grocery code of conduct and more data on food prices. He also said the Competition Bureau will soon have more powers to tackle these issues through changes to the Competition Act. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called for grocers to deliver a plan to lower prices back in September that would offer “real relief” to middle class Canadians and said that he would be willing to impose new taxes on them if they didn’t take action to lower prices.

“The essence of what we’ve created is certainly a more competitive marketplace and that’s the best way to stabilize prices,” he said. “I’ve spoken to all these CEOs, they’re all watching each other.”
