Florida is one of a handful of states that's seeing a surge of record daily high cases. The governor says the jump is because of increased testing for the coronavirus.

Along with Florida, six other states have registered more than 100,000 cases: New York, California, New Jersey, Illinois, Texas and Massachusetts. In March and April, testing was limited mostly to older people who had symptoms of the coronavirus. Since then, testing has expanded and has been opened to people of all ages, whether they have coronavirus symptoms or not.DeSantis said many of those testing positive for the coronavirus now don't have any symptoms and many of them are young."What we've seen now has been a really significant increase in positive test results for people in the 20s and 30s," he said.

Over the weekend, Florida's Department of Health reissued guidelines stressing the importance of social distancing and encouraging people to wear face coverings when social distancing isn't possible.Despite the surge in new cases, DeSantis said there are no plans to roll back guidelines allowing businesses to reopen. He said the number of people going to the hospital for COVID-19 remains far below what they were in March and April.
