One Florida city could receive more than double its monthly rainfall total in only five days as excessive moisture from the Caribbean dumps rain on the state.The incoming storm arrives as Florida and much of the southern United States, including Texas, Arizona and southern California battled extreme heat last week. The rain is expected to be heaviest from Wednesday to Friday, with the National Weather Service warning that flooding could begin as early as Tuesday and continue into the weekend.
Flooding could become an issue, Hubbard added, considering much of southern Florida is currently battling severe drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor map. The incoming rain could help alleviate the drought, especially in areas like Sarasota, which was 25 inches below its normal annual rainfall amount in 2023.According to the map, more than 20 percent of Florida was struggling with severe drought.
