Actor Florence Pugh said she is “enraged” by the allegations that seven fraternity members from Cornell University sexually assaulted a woman in 2024..

“What about the life that those girls then have to endure, with the knowledge that his reputation is more precious than her truth? ”Pugh’s Instagram post is referencing a lawsuit filed on Sept. 16 by a former Cornell student, identified as Jane Doe,that in October 2024 when she was intoxicated, she went to the Chi Pi fraternity house and was given drugs and more alcohol, taken upstairs and was sexually assaulted by multiple men over the course of several hours.

The lawsuit,, alleges that one of the men sent a message to a group chat with other fraternity members and suggested that Doe was available for sex. According to the complaint, Doe filed a report with Cornell’s police department three weeks after the alleged sexual assault.

Doe’s attorney told CBS News that after an investigation at the time, only two of the seven fraternity members were expelled, while the others got lesser punishments, like suspensions or they had to complete workshops or write essays, but no one was arrested.on Sept. 21, Cornell said they “take sexual violence extremely seriously,” and “the Xi chapter of Chi Phi fraternity remains barred from our campus. ” “Federal privacy law prohibits Cornell from disclosing specific information regarding individual students and we therefore are unable to make a public statement on any other disciplinary response,” Kyle Kimball, vice president for university relations, said in the statement.

“Violations of university policies could lead to sanctions up to and including suspension or expulsion. We will respond in detail through the legal process. ” In Pugh’s post, she said she felt “uneasy and sick and anxious” after reading about the lawsuit. She said men should be as “horrified and sickened” as women are, and men should be leading the conversations about it.

“Every single person who knew or heard about this happening, should be looked at with serious concern,” Pugh wrote. “They are as evil as those planning it. To know that a torture as violent as rape is about to happen ‘upstairs’ and not do ANYTHING ABOUT IT, is sick, cowardly and cold. ”“Most importantly, to Jane Doe who bravely stood up to the despicable college that chose to do the wrong thing, you are so unbelievably powerful,” Pugh wrote.

“So strong willed. And know that women everywhere are here to hold you and help you on your healing journey. ”
