Flooding: 100 more register as evacuees in Gatineau, officials concerned about rain advisory
Faced with an increasingly dire flooding situation, Ottawa declared a state of emergency Thursday afternoon.
The incoming Canadian Forces troops were expected to start providing help Friday in western communities, as West Carleton, Constance Bay, Dunrobin and Fitzroy Harbour appeared to be the most threatened so far. Canadian Forces officers were already embedded in the city’s emergency operations centre and troops were also planned to be available to help in Britannia and Cumberland.
“It’s not the time to be the bean-counter,” Watson said. “We’ve got to help the people first before we worry about the bills.” Further upstream and to the west through central Ontario from Renfrew and Lanark counties and across to Georgian Bay, a heavy rainfall warning was issued with amounts in local areas as high as 50 millimetres.
Downstream at Hawkesbury, 95 kilometres east of Ottawa, residents were nervously circulating a rumour that police were about to close the bridge to Quebec — the only such bridge between Ottawa and Montreal. “They’re just asking if it’s going to close,” he said. “Some people feel that would be silly. But I feel some people underestimate just how much water is behind the dam.”Local residents feel “either it’s really going to hit the fan, or nothing,” he said. “It’s not even meeting in the middle.”
“We are confident that the structure is solid,” Racicot said. “But the protocols force us to warn people of the danger. We are entering into an unknown zone right now — completely unknown.” Guilbault said there are 23 residences and 38 cottages in the evacuation zone along the river. Quebec provincial police tweeted they were helping about 250 people get clear of the affected area as a preventive measure.
