Las Vegas attraction pays off every time if you\u0027re of a certain vintage

Then I was stopped cold in my tracks. Jacks Open. Four decades of adulthood had buried this memory, but as I stood in front of this legendary Gottlieb game fingering the flipper buttons, I was transported back to Rush t-shirts, canvas Chuck Taylor high-tops and feathered hair. This was by far my favourite pinball game back in the day. I made a beeline for the ‘Change’ counter, handed over a Hamilton to the volunteer employee and said, ‘all in quarters.

CREDIT: Andrew McCredieThe next 90 minutes or so went by faster than you can say ‘match!’ — which I heard on numerous occasions from the prominently Baby Boomer/Gen X crowd — and I ended up revisiting the change counter a couple of times.
As I awaited my flight back to Vancouver at the gate at Harry Reid International Airport, I felt a single quarter burning a hole in my pocket. I pulled it out, walked over to a slot machine — yes, the airport is littered with them — pushed the big flashing yellow button, watched the three tumblers spin around and stop with no matches. And no payout. What a waste of a quarter.
Admission to the Las Vegas Pinball Hall of Fame is free, though donations to the registered non-profit society that operates the attraction are accepted.
