Director Mel Gibson's Flight Risk is a pulpy, tense action thriller reminiscent of 1980s and 90s blockbusters. While the plot is predictable and riddled with holes, the film features captivating cinematography, three well-written characters, and solid performances from Michelle Dockery, Mark Wahlberg, and Topher Grace. The over-the-top performance of Wahlberg as the villain, however, detracts from the film's serious tone at times. Despite its flaws, Flight Risk offers a fun, forgettable experience for a lighthearted movie night.

In that vein, Flight Risk has the feeling of a cheap blockbuster video DVD discovery from 20 years ago made with a modern production value. Captivating, bright cinematography and three well-written characters make the film surprisingly fun to watch, even amidst the plot holes and predictability. This is a terrific set up for a tight, focused thriller script. And it’s elevated by some straightforward and earnest performances from Dockery and Grace as an unlikely pair forced to land the plane in danger.
